In June 2004, a plaque was unveiled to the memory of James, in the Music Department of Magee University, Derry.
Those present included The Honourable The Irish Society, Tony Frazer the Provost of Magee University, John Hume MEP, Bishop Edward Daly, members of the City Council including Councillor John Kerr, who was the mastermind behind the project. Also in attendance were members of the extended Mac Cafferty family.
At the unveiling music was performed by The Mac Cafferty Singers under the direction of Mr Roy Adams accompanied by Giles Doherty.
Music was also provided by Brenda O’Somachain and a group of her harpists. Other performers included James’s son, Pat and his grandson, James, accompanied by Caroline Cutliffe.
